A meeting of the General Assembly of Women’s Parliamentary Caucus (WPC) was held on Thursday here at the Parliament House.
WPC Secretary MNA Shaista Pervaiz presided over the meeting.

The General Assembly was given a presentation on The Compulsory Immunization and Protection of Health Workers Bill 2015 by Senator Ayesha Raza Farooq who is also the Prime Minister’s Focal Person on Polio.

Women Parliamentarians carried out deliberations on the subject matter and showed their satisfaction on the comprehensiveness of the Bill.

The WPC Members also appreciated the efforts of Senator Ayesha Raza and assured her of their full support once the Bill was tabled in the National Assembly for passage. It may be noted that the Senate has already passed the bill in December 2015.

The General Assembly condemned the Brussels bombings and the innocent lives lost in the attacks. The General Assembly also observed a one minute silence over the tragedy.

Fateha was also offered for the sad demise of the father of MNA Mussarrat Rafiq Mahesar. Women parliamentarians representing all political parties in both the Houses attended the meeting and called for a joint effort to facilitate women’s access to justice with special reference to the inheritance rights, particularly of the widows.

It was discussed and decided that the existing inheritance laws would be reviewed carefully and amendments proposed in the light of Islamic injunctions. They agreed that implementation of laws was a major challenge and that the Caucus will review the existing implementation mechanisms in order to strengthen them.

The General Assembly also discussed future strategies and plan of action for WPC. Secretary WPC Shaista Pervaiz Malik in her concluding remarks reaffirmed WPC’s commitment for making every possible effort to build consensus and a joint strategy for women friendly legislation and implementation.
