ISLAMABAD, Oct 08 (Online): Dr Masoom Yasinzai, vice chancellor, Quaid-e-Azam University(QAU) Islamabad has underscored need for applied research in the universities and higher educational institutions of Pakistan terming the lack of social scientists in the country as dangerous.
He was addressing a gathering of researchers and officials of Institute of Policy Studies (IPS) on Tuesday.
Yasinzai was of the view that universities anywhere in the world were supposed to be centers of excellence that play a key role in national policy formulation and provide guidelines to their governments on the social, political and economic challenges they are faced with.
“The nation was fortunate to have think tanks like IPS which were continuously working to provide their research-based input to the public sector at all levels to improve their governance”, he said.
The VC QAU stressed that Pakistan cannot afford to have research just for the sake of research in its higher educational institutions.
He lamented that in the current affair shows in all television channels of Pakistan hardly any social scientist was invited to suggest academic solutions to the problems being faced by the nation.
