MoU for research work on traditional medicine

KARACHI, Oct 18 (APP): The International Center for Chemical and
Biological Sciences (ICCBS), Karachi University, and Institute of Xinjiang Traditional Uygur Medicine (IXJUM), Xinjiang,China, have inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to carry out research work on traditional medicine for the discovery of new herbal medicines.
A Karachi University official said here on Friday that one of the basic
aims of this agreement is to establish academic and scientific cooperation between both the institutions.
He said that Director ICCBS Prof. Dr Muhammad Iqbal Choudhary
on behalf of the international Centre and Director IXJUM signed the MoU in a special signing ceremony, held in Xinjiang, a province of China.
On the occasion, ICCBS International Research Coordinator Prof. Dr Ahsana Dar Farooq and provincial ministers of Xinjiang province and other officials of the IXJUM were also present.
Dr Choudhary said that ICCBS, University of Karachi,
is the premier establishment of higher learning and research in the
sub-continent and in the developing world, where scientists are engaged day and night in the research work of various sciences, including herbal medical
science.
The agreement will further establish co-operation in spheres of
scientific research, education and training between the ICCBS-KU and IXJUM.
DirectorIXJUM said that Institute of Xinjiang is sole institution specially targeting on research and development (R&D) of traditional Uygur medicine in China.
With modern science and technology, IXJUM focuses on literature review,
data mining from traditional from traditional Uygur medicine clinical experiences and monographs, as well as drug discovery on neurodegenerative diseases, skin and ulcer diseases from Uygur folk herbal medicines, establishment of standardization on quality control, efficacy and safety evaluation for Uygur herbal drugs at international level, he said.
As per MoU, both the parties agreed that an
optimal form of cooperation needs to be achieved. Cooperation in particular
areas, including, medicinal plants, must be established in the forms acceptable by both parties.
Both the institutions agreed that binational
workshops/seminar/ conferences will be organised jointly to develop linkages
between academicians and researchers.
This agreement will be effective for a period of five years from the
date of signing, it was further stated.
