ISLAMABAD, Sep 15 (APP): Pakistan Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (PCSIR) is working to produce various herbal
cosmetics products, as it was noticed that toxic metals, minerals,
arsenic oxides and pig fat are being used in other cosmectics and
imported bath soaps that may affect the nervous system.
Locally-made cheap cosmetic products contain large quantities
of banned chemicals that damage the skin and increase the risk of cancer.
Face-whitening creams contained many hazardous chemicals including steroids and mercury salts that left black spots on the skin and might
lead to skin diseases including melanoma, according to a report issued
by Pakistan Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (PCSIR).
Low-cost shampoos and hair dyes contain chemicals including lineralkoil benzene and sulphonic acid which are used in carpet manufacturing and car washing products and PPD chemicals that
may cause skin cancer or permanent hair fall and allergy problems.
Talking to APP, Member Science PCSIR, Dr. S S Tahir said PCSIR
is producing herbal products including soaps, shampoos, face wash
and also hajj kit which is free from any haram (prohibited)
ingredients.
"Cosmetics of PCSIR are made up of all halal (allowed)
ingredient and vegetable oils is used in all these products", he said.
Hajj Kit is specially formulated for the use of pilgrims,
taking into consideration of religious requirement for performing
the Hajj or Ummrah, he said.
He said stearic acid is a common ingredient of all the
cosmetics and toiletries, which is synthesized from animal fat, adding
in the products of Hajj Kit, the stearic acid is extracted from cotton
seed oil.
In Hajj and Umrah, many people are concerned about skin-care
products containing non-alcoholic, no fragrance and herbal ingredients.
"In response to the needs of fellow Muslims, all our products
meet and comply with the Islamic standards", Dr. Tahir said.
Hajj Kit contains pure herbal based halal products and comply
with all Islamic standards (which is need for Hajj and Umerah) and
rising trend of using halal and herbal cosmetics in Pakistan.
Dr. Tahir said there is lack of awareness among people and they
are not concerned what they are eating or using for their skin, is safe
or unsafe.
There must be some law which may ensure enlisting of
ingredients used in certain product, he said.
