5 hydel power projects to be completed by 2016: Reports

ISLAMABAD, Jan 12 (Online): Five hydel power projects‚ with a capacity to produce electricity over 5‚789 Megawatts (MW) would be completed by 2016, media reported on Sunday.

According to an official of Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) ‚ these power projects would help meet the energy requirements of the country.

He said that Diamer-Bhasha dam project on river Indus will generate 4500 megawatts electricity and store over eight million acre feet of water to meet growing power and irrigation needs.

He said that Golen Gol hydropower project‚ being constructed by WAPDA in district Chitral‚ will complete in 2015 and will produce 106 MW, adding Neelum-Jhelum hydroelectric project is being constructed over river Neelum and the project would be completed in 2016 and would produce 969 MW, WAPDA official added.

He maintained that the Duber-Khwar hydropower project located in district Kohistan would produce 130 MW power while, Kurram hydropower project would produce 84 MW power and it will be completed within 48 months.
