NAB files reference of Rs. 2.03bln against Malik Naveed ex-IGP KP, 9 others

PESHAWAR, March 18 (Online): NAB (KP) on Tuesday filed a formal reference of Rs. 2.03 billion against Malik Naveed former-IGP (KP) Police and nine other senior serving & retired Police Officers in the Accountability Court Peshawar.
A press statement stated, on receipt of complaints, NAB (KP) authorized an inquiry against senior Police Officers Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and others for alleged embezzlement in procurement of SMG, Magazine, Ammunition, Heavy Weapons, Bullet Proof Jackets, Night Vision Goggles etc, in 2008-09 & 2009-10 by violating Government rules thus causing a loss of Rs. 2.03 Billion to the State Exchequer.
On request of Police Department, (KP) Government had approved purchase, upgrading weapon and equipment for its use to counter the unabated law & order and security situation in the province. An amount of over Rs. 7 Billion was released by Federal and Provincial government for recruitment, training of police personnel and procurement of weapons and equipment.
During the course of inquiry, it was revealed that the contractor turned approver in connivance with other accused persons was controlling the entire process of competition of bids to get the contract. The contract was awarded to a firm having no previous experience of supplying such items and for which payments were made in advance.
The inspection committee were also found responsible for not carrying out tests / trials of weapons, ammunition and equipment according to procedure and obtained clearance reports from agencies concerned which were later on proved to be wrong and the persons concerned have already been made responsible and booked under the law.
The findings of the inquiry established involvement of senior Police Officers both retired and serving. Other accused persons in the reference include Abdul Majeed Khan Commandant FC Peshawar, Abdul Latif Khan Gandapur Ex-Addl IGP Operation (KP) Peshawar, Sajid Ali Khan DIG CPO Peshawar, Muhammad Suliman Khan Ex-DIG HQrs Peshawar, Javed Khan Ex-Budget Officer Police Deptt, Kashif Alam Ex-AIG Estab CPO Peshawar, Sadiq Kamal Orakzai, the then DIG Telecommunication, Raza Ali Khan Private Person and Amir Ghazan Khan Private Person.
