Kidnapping cases on the rise in Karachi

KARACHI March 18 (Online): The Rangers and police have been conducting thousands of raids against criminals in the southern metropolis but violent crime in the city continues unabated.

On condition of remaining anonymous a member of the police’s Anti-Violent Crime Cell (AVCC) tasked with combating kidnapping for ransom in the city has revealed that the cell tasked with operating against kidnappers has been reduced to arranging ransom exchanges.

The AVCC officer further revealed, the cell has been operating without a chief officer for the last two months during which period 32 victims have been kidnapped, most have had to secure their release after paying heavy ransom amounts.

The officer adds that 10 kidnapping cases are still in process; the victims include 3 children, 3 doctors and 4 businessmen.
