LAHORE, Sep 13 (INP): The Pakistan People’s Party on Friday challenged non-party based local government election in the Lahore High Court.
The PPP, in a petition, contended that the elections announced by the Punjab government were in violation of spirit of the Constitution since there was a parliamentary system in the country.
It said that the National Assembly and all the provincial assemblies came into being through party based elections.
The petition said that holding election on non-party basis was in sheer violation of the Constitution and it would lead to corruption in the society.
It also said that the several sections of the local government act were also in confrontation with the Constitution.
The PPP prayed the court to declare the non-party based election as null and void. Former Punjab governor and senior PPP leader Latif Khosa was representing the party in the LHC.
