Zafar Baloch’s funeral held as Lyrai shuts to mourn

KARACHI Sept 19 (Online): Funeral prayers of Zafar Baloch, a key figure of outlawed Peoples Amn Committee shot dead late on Wednesday in Lyari, were offered here Thursday as the old city area remained shut to mourn his death amid tension.

Baloch was gunned down by unknown assailants on motorcycles in Lyari, one of Karachi’s oldest localities, plagued by gang war and criminal activities.

Tension and fear gripped the city’s south district, particularly Lyari and its adjoining areas, following the killing of Baloch.

Thousands of people attended Baloch’s funerals in Lyari’s football ground on Thursday morning. He will be laid to rest in Mewa Shah graveyard.

According to family sources, he was buried at Mewa Shah graveyard.

The incident took place in the limits of Kalakot police. Police and PAC leaders said after after taking him to Lyari General Hospital, Zafar Baloch was moved to Aga Khan Hospital in critical condition.

SSP City Faisal Bashir Memon also confirmed the death of Zafar Baloch.

“Two men on a motorbike opened fired at Baloch and he was hit in the chest. His aide Muhammad Ali who also received multiple gunshot wounds died on the spot while Baloch died at the hospital,” he said.

Tension gripped Lyari and adjacent areas following the killing of Zafar Baloch.

SSP Fasal Bashir Memon said that heavy contingents of police and Rangers have been deployed in Lyari following the incident.

No arrests have been made so far.

This slaying of a key player comes amid Rangers and police targeted operation in Karachi weeks after the government decided to purge the metropolis of criminals.
