New IG Police takes over in KP after deadly church bombings

ISLAMABAD, Sept 23 (Online): The federal government on Monday appointed new Inspector General of Police for the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province followng yesterday’s deadly church bombings that over 80 people.

Inspector General (IG) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Ehsan Ghani has been sacked over the twin suicide bombings of Peshawar Church yesterday that killed at least 81 people and injured over 140 others.

According to media reports Secretary Establishment Division Shahid Aziz had forwarded a summary to the premier to this effect, in which the names of three officers had been nominated for the post of IG KP police.

Nominees for the post of IG police included the then Punjab Counter Terrorism Department Additional IG Nasir Khan Durrani, Regional Police Officer (RPO) Rawalpindi Nasim ul Zaman and Additional IG Khalid Masood.

Reports also revealed that the Chief Minister (CM) of Punjab, Shahbaz Sharif had been reluctant to let Nasir Durrani go because of his highly professional reputation and good performance.

The appointment came a day after the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was shaken by a heinous attack on churchgoers.

The attack claimed 80 lives and injured another 120. Thirty-four women and seven children were among the dead. Seventeen injured were reported to be in critical condition.

On the recommendations made by CM KPK, PM Nawaz Sharif approved appointment of Nasir Durrani as new Inspector General of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

A notification has also been issued in this regard here on Monday.

Nasir Durrani has taken charge as new IGP KP.
