Journalists receive murder threats from Tehreek e Taliban

SIBI Oct 31 (PPI): Journalists have received murder threats from Umer Khalid Khurasani group of banned Tehreek e Taliban.
Chairman of All Pakistan Journalists Council Shabbir Hussain Turi, famous journalist of Kurram Agency, General Secretary of Wana Press Club Deen Muhammad Wazir and other journalists have received written threats in which they have been asked to leave the country otherwise be ready for their death.
Journalists have contacted relevant government authorities and have requested to provide them security. Journalists of Lahore submitted an application to CCPO Lahore, due to regular threats, to register a case and to provide legal security. Punjab police took immediate action on the application and registered a case against banned Tehreek e Taliban Afghanistan.
According to All Pakistan Journalists Council, they have asked for action against the nominated culprits and to provide security to journalists fulfilling their responsibilities in Lahore and other areas.
It is added that the chairman of All Pakistan Journalists Council Shabbir Hussain Turi wrote various articles and essays against banned Tehreek e Taliban, including after Peshawar incident due to which banned Tehreek e Taliban has become his enemy.
Due to continuous threats, aforementioned journalists have stopped performing their professional responsibilities.
None of the country’s organizations working for journalists’ rights, welfare and security have yet shown solidarity with these journalists whereas International Journalists organizations have asked the Pakistan government to provide security to the threatened journalists. A meeting of All Pakistan Journalists Council called to discuss future action, and analysed that the Govt. has failed to protect the Journalists.
It should be remembered that four family members of General Secretary of Wana Press Club Deen Muhammad Wazir were killed by Taliban in 2007.
