Umerkote, Sindh, Jan 11 (HQ): With the death of two more children on the night between Sunday and Monday the death toll of children in Thar Desert has climbed to 20 in just 40 days.

In the Civil Hospital of Umerkote, there is not separate ward for children. There are special government doctors posted, but they give more time to their private practices than their government duties, which is the general trend of almost all doctors of the health department, government of Sindh.

On the night between Sunday and Monday, two children, Amrat and Majeed of Village Khariro Charan died. Malnutrition and lack of proper healthcare facilities are considered as major causes of deaths of children in Thar and in other areas of Sindh province.

Due to a sharp media focus, the children deaths in Thar are properly highlighted, while the deaths of malnutrition-hit children in other rural areas of Sindh province are hardly reported in media. The performance of the health department in whole province is dismal due to very high corruption and bad governance.
