NADRA registers 1208 prisoners of Central Jail Karachi

Islamabad, Sept 27 (Online): National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) completes registration of 1208 prisoners in Central Jail Karachi.

The latest drive to register prisoners was initiated on the special directives of Minister for Interior and Narcotics Control Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan. Chairman NADRA following the directives launched a pilot project in central jail Karachi on September 17. Mobile Registration Vans were deployed in order to process fresh and duplicate CNICs of the prisoners at the jail. Duplicate cards are processed in case the prisoner has lost his CNIC and same can be retrieved through thumb impression. NADRA staff registered 1208 prisoner by capturing photo, finger prints and corresponding data respectively. The said data has also been integrated with NADRA’s national database.
The spokesperson of NADRA in a press statement issued here today said, “The regional offices of NADRA had already conducted snap assessment survey at all the central and district jails of the country earlier this year. Through the survey it was found that in six jails of Lahore 2976 fresh and 337 duplicate; in five jails of Karachi 808 fresh and 173 duplicate; in six jails of Islamabad 190 fresh and 34 duplicate; in 8 jails of Peshawar 509 fresh and 501 duplicate; in eleven jails of Quetta 396 fresh and 23 duplicate; and in seven jails of Sargodha 1483 fresh and 553 duplicate Computerized National Identity Cards were required to be processed. To this effect NADRA deployed 62 Mobile Registration Vans (MRVs) to process 6362 fresh CNICs and 1621 duplicate CNICs of the prisoners in 62 districts of the country. However it pertinent to mention here that NADRA has already registered 4424 prisoners and processed their CNICs in jails across the country.”
NADRA’s latest drive of registering the prisoners aims at extending Government’s outreach to all and sundry specially those marginalized and impoverished segments of the society who can now have a right to exercise their franchise and be entitled to state’s services.
